The Southern Pacific Daylight #4449 is the only remaining streamlined steam locomotive in America that's still under steam.  The only surviving example of Southern Pacific Railroad's GS-4 class of steam locomotives, it was built in May 1941 by Lima and had received it's red and orange "Daylight" paint scheme for the passenger trains of the same name which it hauled for most of its service career.  It was restored to running for the American Freedom Train and it's currently maintained and operated by the Friends of the 4449.  The Daylight came thru Minneapolis in July 2009 on it's way to Michigan for Train Festival 2009 as a fund raiser for Pere Marquette #1225.  This was the first time it was back in Minnesota since it was here in 1975 pulling the Freedom Train.  Click on the picture for the full size photo if you like.

The Daylight pulled into Minneapolis Junction in Minneapolis around 4:00PM in the afternoon.  It will remain here in the #261's shed until Saturday, July 18th when it will pull out on it's way to Michigan and Train Festival 2009.

JULY 18, 2009

The Daylight was ready to go Saturday morning on it's way to Chicago.  I got down to Minneapolis Junction at 6:30AM to take photos for about an hour.  I left at 7:30AM as it was going to depart at 8:00AM.  I made it down to St. Paul's Warner Road in plenty of time for a runby shot.  Forty minutes of waiting for 15 seconds of WOO-HOO!
